Images of the Dempster Highway

The Dempster Highway

The only all-season public road in North America that takes you across the Arctic Circle and beyond to the high Arctic, the Dempster Highway offers you an incredible glimpse into this extraordinary environment, this magnificent land, harsh and unforgiving, yet full of majesty and splendour.

Natural Wonders in Breathtaking Scenery

Visually stunning, the Dempster highway takes you through a remote ecosystem ordinarily inaccessible, back to an era of unspoiled beauty and rare perspective. The tundra rolls to the edges of the four horizons, interrupted only by the breathtaking mountains the have stood watch over this incredible landscape since the beginning of time.  Glimpses of wildlife such as Caribou, Moose and Grizzly along with an amazing array of birds and flowers will thrill even the most seasoned traveler.

Fort McPherson and the High Arctic

Whether you take a day trip to the awesome Tombstone Mountains Interpretive Centre or overnight north of the Arctic Circle, a trip up the Dempster Highway will open you up to a new world.  Traveling north of the Arctic Circle brings you to the spectacular views at the Northwest Territories border.  Driving northwards brings you to the community of Fort McPherson (or Tetl'it Zheh, "house above the river").  Located within the traditional territory of the Tetlit Gwich'in, this community offers a gas station, convenience store and tour opportunities.  Continuing further north on to Tsiigehtchic and the community of Inuvik, Northwest Territories.  Inuvik offers all the major conveniences of a small town as well as the starting point for your journey on to the Arctic Ocean and Tuktoyaktyk by plane.   Who can pass up such variety and the opportunity for once in a lifetime experiences on this magnificent drive.
