The Top of the World Highway
For those who are looking for an alternate route on their driving vacation through the Yukon and Alaska can take the Top of the World Highway, connecting Dawson City, Yukon to Tok, Alaska.
Departing from Dawson City, highway travelers can catch the free George Black ferry, part of the Yukon Highway system.
Meander Along Mountains
The Top of the World Highway is so named because much of its route meanders along the tops of mountains and ridges with endless views. Those driving along this route are able to see beautiful vistas including spectacular alpine valleys.
Chicken and Tok, Alaska
Crossing the Canada/United States border at Poker Creek, travelers continue along the Taylor Highway to the town of Chicken. Legend has it that Chicken was named because the original inhabitants could not decide on the spelling of Ptarmigan, a bird similar to the grouse. Moving on from Chicken you reach Tetlin Junction, about 16 km (10 miles) from Tok, Alaska.
